Heeramandi web series directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali remained in the news for days. The web series that premiered on Netflix created history by becoming the second most-watched non-English show globally on the OTT platform. Heeramandi also remained in the news because of the backlash received by the filmmaker for Historical inaccuracies. Also, the star cast, especially Sharmin Segal received a lot of criticism for her acting chops. Heeramandi had multiple stars like Manisha Koirala, Sonakshi Sinha, Aditi Rao Hydari and many others in the lead. Jason Shah played the role of Cartwright in the web series. In a podcast Inside the Mind With Rushab, Jason Shah spoke at length about how he felt that a lot could have been done with the web series than it what actually was as it had the capacity. Speaking about director Sanjay Leela Bhansali, he mentioned that he wasn’t directing much and there were other directors. He said, “It was his first time (doing a web series). Film is a little different because web is a little stretched, you’ve got a lot of episodes to make, and it’s not made in a short time He also wasn’t directing that much. I had other directors with me.”

Jason Shah also mentioned about there being ‘lack of communication’ on sets as oppose to miscommunication. He mentioned that had there been more freedom, he could have played the role of Cartwright much better. He gave the example of Ben Kingsley movie Gandhi and said ‘They really show how far racism can go, and the dichotomy between who someone thinks they are, and another human being’. He stated that in Heeremandi, the characters weren’t given much depth. When asked if he shared his concerns with Sanjay Leela Bhansali, he joked that he was almost about to get termed as ‘problem maker’. Despite all the backlash and negatives, Netflix has renewed Heeramandi for its season 2. Talking to Variety, SLB shared the storyline of the next season and mentioned that the Tawaifs will now be seen entering the film industry.
